tent_caterpillarTent caterpillar is a small pest that prefers to feed on trees in the cherry and apple family. The larvae hatch from eggs in the spring at about the time wild cherry leaves begin to unfold. They gather at a branch fork or crotch and begin to build a protective web from which they go forth to feed on newly opened leaves and to which they return. As the caterpillars grow, so does their web. When populations are large whole trees are defoliated.
